What Is Currency Quest?
Currency Quest is my ongoing challenge: I’m trying to collect the rarest, weirdest, and most valuable $1 bills—everything from low serial numbers to dramatic misprints—by searching through $1 bank straps that I withdraw from local banks.
Each bill I find gets cataloged, stored, and tracked. I even made a downloadable template so you can follow along and fill in your own collection:

How It Works
Here’s how you get started:
Step 1: Pick Two Banks
- Withdrawal Bank: This is the bank where you have an account and withdraw your $1 bills.
- Dump Bank: A different bank where you re-deposit the bills you don’t keep. That way, you avoid seeing the same bills over and over.
Step 2: Withdraw & Hunt
Ask your bank for $1 bills—start with $1,000 or more if you’re serious. Take them home and start flipping through. Look for anything that matches the rare bill types listed in the template. Anything you don’t want to keep? Return it to your dump bank.
Step 3: Track Your Progress
Replace the placeholder in your collector’s binder with the real thing whenever you score a find!
The 59 Bills to Look For
Your checklist lives inside the Currency Quest Template PDF, which includes:
- 🔢 Low & high serial numbers (e.g. 00000001, 99999999)
- 🔁 Patterns (radars, repeaters, ladders)
- 💥 Error notes (misprints, ink smears, inverted backs)
- 💫 Star notes (common, rare, old)
- 🏛️ Historical notes (Silver Certificates, Hawaii notes, North Africa WWII issues)
- 🎉 Fun finds (birthday notes, tombstone notes)

Tips for Better Searching
- Ask for “new straps” or “uncirculated” bills—sometimes you get lucky with fresh bricks.
- Look for signs of errors: misaligned print, strange ink, mismatched serials.
- Build a loop—withdraw, search, deposit. Rinse and repeat.
- Use a magnifier and good lighting—you’ll be amazed what you miss otherwise.
- Keep your dump bank and withdrawal bank separate. Always.
